For the past fifteen years, Viterbo University has held a Conference on Servant Leadership for individuals who aspire to be servant leaders in nonprofit organizations, business, government, health care, ministry, and education. This year's conference recognizes workplace culture. Our intention is to gather the community for a conversation on relationships: renewed and restored. Michael Bush CEO, Great Place to Work

Michael Bush is CEO of Great Place to Work for All which is the global analytical authority on high-trust, high-performance workplace cultures. GPTWFA provides analytics to 10,000 organizations in over 57 countries. It also produces a number of annual “Best Workplaces” lists including the popular FORTUNE 100 Best Companies to Work For® list. Prior to GPTW, Bush was the CEO of Tetra Tech Communications, a billion dollar global telecommunications infrastructure firm. Bush was also a member of President Obama’s White House Business Council. He earned his M.S. in Management from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business.


Tom Thibodeau Distinguished Professor of Servant Leadership and Conference Emcee, Viterbo University

Thomas Thibodeau is the Distinguished Professor of Servant Leadership at Viterbo University where he has been teaching for 39 years. Tom is the founder of the master's degree in Servant leadership at Viterbo, the first and only master's degree of its kind in the nation. He is a husband, father, grandfather, teacher, active community member and part owner of a country tavern. Thibodeau speaks and consults regionally and nationally on the Positive Power of Servant Leadership.


Carolyn Colleen Author of "F.I.E.R.C.E.: Transform your life in the face of adversity, 5 minutes at a time!"

Carolyn Colleen, PhD candidate, speaker, author, coach, was born and raised in the Midwestern United States. She describes herself as a FIERCE mother, daughter, sister, and friend.

Out of sheer necessity Carolyn developed the F.I.E.R.C.E. 5 method, which helped her grow from a downtrodden, scared and ragged victim, standing in a food line at the Salvation Army, to the confident and successful person she is today, living a happy life she never realized she deserved.


John Armbruster Author of "Tailspin"

John Armbruster graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a journalism degree. He began his career writing for public radio, and later, two Wisconsin newspapers: La Crosse Tribune and Marshfield News-Herald.

John returned to UW and earned a degree in secondary education-social studies, and later, a master’s in education from Viterbo University. Since 1993, John has taught high school and middle school social studies courses.

Tailspin is Armbruster’s first book. He lives outside of Viroqua, Wisconsin.


Arbender Robinson Broadway Actor

Arbender Robinson made his Broadway debut in the Tony Award winning production of Hairspray. He has also been seen in: In Transit, Shuffle Along (revival), Les Miserables (revival), Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Disney's The Lion King, Book Of Mormon, Hair, Ragtime (revival), Disney's The Little Mermaid, Hairspray. Arbender has had several tv appearances including: The Last O.G., Nurse Jackie, Little Voice, Tony Awards, Good Morning America, The Today Show, CBS Sunday Morning. . Actor, Teaching Artist, Sacred Activist. A native of Chicago, Illinois, a Viterbo University Grad, and resides in New York City.


Linda Belton Author

Linda Belton, RN, MS served as a Senior Executive in the Veterans Health Administration for twenty years including the VA’s first Director of Organizational Health and Deputy Director.

In these roles she has presented broadly on topics of Organizational Health, including civility and servant leadership. She co-created the CREW initiative (Civility, Respect and Engagement in the Workplace), which has been widely used in VA, endorsed by The Joint Commission, and replicated internationally. She introduced programs in servant leadership within the Veterans Health Administration, building the foundation for VHA’s intensive and ongoing efforts.

During her career, she received three Presidential Rank Awards (Meritorious and Distinguished Executive). She served on the Board of Trustees of the Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership (2011-2015). Linda is a Lifetime Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives (LFACHE), and a lay Associate of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother.

She has authored A Nobler Side of Leadership: The Art of Humanagement (2016), A Nobler Side of Leadership: The Workbook (2017), The First Shall Be Last: Servant Leadership in Scripture (in publication), and has co-authored publications on Servant Leadership, CREW (Civility, Respect and Engagement in the Workplace), Organizational Health, and workplace violence.

Linda currently lives with her husband in Ann Arbor, Michigan.


James Bowey Photo Media Artist and Professor

James Bowey assistant professor of photography and digital imaging, and an active photo media artist. I have deep professional experience as an international photographer, filmmaker and editor; and I’ve developed and teach an innovative set of photography and digital imaging courses based on a theory and practice pedagogy. My scholarly agenda is focused on new media image theory and emerging models of media arts for which I’ve created a set of national and regional projects as laboratories for teaching and learning. As and artist and teacher my goal is to create compelling work and prepare students in emerging modes of photography and digital imaging for contemporary media arts careers.


John McHugh Director of Corporate Communications, Kwik Trip, Inc.

John McHugh is the Director of Corporate Communications, Leadership Development, and Training for Kwik Trip, Inc., based in La Crosse, Wisconsin. In his role at Kwik Trip he has helped the company achieve recognition as a Top Workplace as listed by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Minneapolis Star Tribune and the Des Moines Register.

Prior to joining Kwik Trip in 2004, John was an instructor and principal at Aquinas High School in La Crosse. He holds degrees from the University of Saint Thomas in Saint Paul, Minnesota and the Gregorian University in Rome, Italy. John sits on the Boards of Trust Point, Betterlife Insurance and Viterbo University.

He and his wife Maggie enjoy living at their log home near Sparta, Wisconsin.


Mariah Weddle Spiritual Care Specialist

A 2018 graduate of Viterbo’s Master of Arts in Servant Leadership degree program, Mariah Weddle is a spiritual care specialist at Guest House of Milwaukee, which provides shelter, education, and other services to Milwaukee’s homeless population. While studying at Viterbo, Weddle served as house program coordinator for Place of Grace, a Catholic Worker House with deep connections to Viterbo. “We rise by lifting others” are her words to live by. Mariah is the owner of Holistic Love & Wellness, LLC.


Matt Waters Musician

Matt Waters has been playing violin for 8+ years, locally and at regional events. He has played in the La Crosse Youth Symphony Orchestra, Impromptu Quartet, WSMA High School Honors Music Projects, and charity events. He has won numerous awards for state solo and ensemble as well as fiddle contests. A recent graduate of Aquinas High School, Matt has a heart for serving and leading. He plans to attend Marquette University in the fall.


Jeff Thompson CEO Emeritus, Gundersen Health Systems

Dr. Jeff Thompson is the former CEO of Gundersen Health System, pediatrician, and author of Lead True: Live Your Values, Build Your People, Inspire Your Community. Gundersen was nationally recognized for higher quality, lower costs and dropping its green house gases by 95%. Dr Thompson spoke at the Paris climate talks and was honored by the Whitehouse as a champion for change. He is currently the board chair of Healthcare Without Harm.


Ryan Clark Leadership Development Specialist

Ryan Clark has worked for Kwik Trip for 19 years and has been involved in training and development for the last 14. He received his master’s degree in Servant Leadership from Viterbo in 2016. He is a United States Air Force veteran and serves on the board of directors for Freedom Honor Flight in La Crosse, WI. Ryan currently lives in Onalaska, WI with his wife and two daughters.


Caitlin Wilson Director of Corporate Communications, Marine Credit Union

Caitlin Wilson is a Viterbo University Master of Servant Leadership graduate. She is trained in corporate communications and driven by a love of connections - of people, of ideas & within communities. Hired by Marine Credit Union in 2014 to tell the organization’s story, she works to empower employees to inform, engage and inspire others. A La Crosse native raised by a family of teachers, her passions are her family, studying the inward journey and living with earth’s rhythms.


Bernard Osborne Author

Bernard Osborne has a Master's of Servant Leadership degree from Viterbo University and over thirty years of leading and supervisory experience in the flow-instrumentation side of Badger Meter, Inc. He lives in Racine Wisconsin with his wife and three rescued dogs, and they, like humans, thrive best in an atmosphere of trust, community, and safety.


Sam Scinta Publisher, Fulcrum Publishing

Sam Scinta is the publisher for Fulcrum Publishing. Sam joined North American Press, a division of Fulcrum Publishing, as a research associate in 1992, and worked as an acquisitions editor and systems administrator for Fulcrum from 1993 to 1998. Sam received his JD from the University of Denver and worked as a public finance attorney for three years. He returned to Fulcrum as vice president and associate publisher in 2001, and in December 2006 was named president and publisher. In 2007, he was named as one of the “Ten to Watch” in the Denver arts and culture scene by the Rocky Mountain News. In 2015, Sam founded IM Education, Inc., a nonprofit focusing on education programming, and he rejoined Fulcrum in 2021. He is a lecturer in the Servant Leadership Program at Viterbo University and the Political Science Department at the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse. In 2021, in partnership with Viterbo University’s Reinhart Institute for Ethics in Leadership, Sam created Rebuilding American Civics, a program designed to provide civics education and discussion for community members, and also co-created the Servant Leadership Today podcast. The developer of Fulcrum’s best-selling Speaker’s Corner books series on contemporary political and social issues, Sam has edited two collections, Spirit and Reason: The Vine Deloria, Jr. Reader and Parting Shots from My Brittle Bow (with Eugene McCarthy). He served as president of the Board of Publishers Association of the West, president of the Wisconsin Center for the Book, and board member of the Jefferson County (Colorado) Public Library Foundation. He has served as chairman of the City of Onalaska (Wisconsin) Waterfront Project Management Team and chairman of the Onalaska Tourism Commission. He is a former member of the Board of Curators of the Wisconsin Historical Society and the Board of the Winding Rivers Library District and is a member of the American Antiquarian Society. He currently serves on several boards in the Western Wisconsin region
