Background: 

Viterbo University’s Center for Professional Learning offers world-class custom leadership development experiences. Coaches have a profound lasting influence on students both on and off the field. Coaches may not recognize the importance of leadership skills and rely on their own experiences with traditional coaching methods. Their influence can strengthen or harm the development of the athlete. Coaching today has a stronger emphasis on developing the whole person and supporting the mental and emotional well-being of the athlete. There are often limited resources and time constraints for leadership training throughout the organization. 

Servant leadership is a leadership style in which a leader’s primary focus is on serving and meeting the needs of others. Servant leadership behaviors have been shown to empower others, enhance team morale, build trust, and develop future leaders. It has been demonstrated that coaches who have strong servant leadership skills and behaviors have a stronger, more positive relationship with their athletes.

This program will provide training specifically tailored for coaches and athletic directors on the fundamentals of servant leadership and coaching. The program will focus on developing coaches and athletic directors who emphasize the holistic development of their athletes, along with developing a platform to understand the fundamentals of servant leadership and their role in the development of the athlete.

Who should attend?:

Individuals who work closely with athletes of all ages and abilities.

Logistics:

This certificate program is comprised of five modules and will include lecture/learning videos, articles, discussion forums, journaling, and a coaching toolkit. There will be an optional virtual meeting every Wednesday from 7:00-8:00 pm CST via Zoom. The time commitment for program completion is 2-3 hours per week.

The total cost for the Certificate program is $199 which includes online access to Viterbo's online learning platform, Moodle, as well as all course materials.
