Session 1: Fiduciary Duties of Nonprofit Boards
Friday, December 4: 8:30am-10:00am

You’re a board member, now what? What is fiduciary responsibility and what does it mean for you?  During this session, we will look at non-profit governance and discuss some best practices while keeping in mind the diversity amongst different types of organizations.  Additionally, we will learn about governance structure, policies, and basic legal and tax compliance.  Lastly, we will discuss how to walk the line between oversight and operations in the relationship between the board and management.

Session 2: Basic Nonprofit Financial Literacy
Friday, December 11: 8:30am-10:00am

Now that you understand your fiduciary duties, how do you provide financial oversight?  What if you’re not a “numbers” person? Or, even if you are a self-proclaimed “finance geek,” nonprofit financials can look like a foreign language.  During this session, you will gain an understanding of nonprofit financial basics, learn how to evaluate the quality of financial information, and explore how to strengthen financial accountability within your organization.

Session 3: Financial Reporting & Monitoring for Financial Health
Friday, December 18: 8:30am-10:00am
Fiduciary duties, check! Quality financial information, check! Now let’s talk about how financial information can be used for decision making and evaluating mission impact. How does this look different without a profit motive? During the final session, we will discuss setting financial position targets, examine the benefits of programmatic budgeting, and learn how to measure financial performance and outcome effectiveness in a nonprofit environment.
